Golden Week Japan 2027: Dates, Holidays & Train Booking

Travelers preparing to board a Shinkansen during Japan's spring travel season Travel Tips

Golden Week 2027 at a glance

Japan’s Golden Week 2027 national holidays are April 29 and May 3–5. April 30 and May 6 are ordinary weekdays. May 1–5 makes a five-day weekend-and-holiday block for people with Saturdays and Sundays off; taking April 30 off extends it to April 29–May 5. These are calendar patterns, not everybody’s work schedule.

For a trip on fixed dates, secure accommodation and the hardest intercity leg before adding timed attractions. If your preferred train is unavailable, try another departure or travel day while keeping the hotel base. The dates below are confirmed national holidays; crowd forecasts and railway peak-period measures need separate operator notices.

Golden Week 2027 Dates

The Cabinet Office lists these national holidays in the 2027 Golden Week period:

Date Day Official holiday status Planning meaning
April 29, 2027 Thursday Showa Day First holiday; some travelers may start early
April 30, 2027 Friday Not a national holiday Bridge workday; taking leave creates a seven-day break
May 1, 2027 Saturday Weekend Start of a five-day weekend-to-holiday stretch
May 2, 2027 Sunday Weekend Domestic leisure travel remains likely
May 3, 2027 Monday Constitution Memorial Day National holiday
May 4, 2027 Tuesday Greenery Day National holiday
May 5, 2027 Wednesday Children’s Day National holiday
May 6, 2027 Thursday Not a national holiday A useful target for travel after the holiday block

Do not copy a 2026 calendar. In 2026, May 6 is a substitute holiday; the Cabinet Office’s 2027 list does not show May 6 as a national holiday. Your airline, hotel, railway and attraction can still set its own operating schedule, so the national calendar is the starting point, not a promise of opening hours.

Why the 2027 Pattern Matters

Traveler arranging a spring Japan itinerary on a calendar and map

Golden Week is not one event at one venue. It is a cluster of national holidays that moves domestic demand across trains, flights, highways, hotels and major attractions. The Japan National Tourism Organization describes late April to early May as one of Japan’s busiest travel periods and warns that trains and hotels can be packed.

The 2027 pattern creates two different traveler groups:

  • people using only the official holidays and weekend, with a practical five-day break from May 1 to May 5;
  • people taking April 30 off, creating a seven-day break from April 29 to May 5.

That makes April 29, May 1, and the end of May 5 especially important dates to treat cautiously. Actual peak direction and operator-specific restrictions are not yet fixed this far ahead. Recheck official transport notices when 2027 timetables and holiday measures are published.

Choose the booking service for your actual route

Travelers moving through a busy Japanese railway concourse with luggage

A Tokyo departure does not identify the right JR website. Use the route and ticket product:

Your journey Official service Sales rule to check
Tokyo–Sendai, Nagano, Niigata, or another eligible JR East journey JR-EAST Train Reservation Ordinary sales normally start at 10:00 JST one month before the journey.
Tokyo–Kyoto or Shin-Osaka and eligible Tokaido–Sanyo–Kyushu Shinkansen journeys SmartEX reception times Eligible reservations can start up to one year ahead at 05:30 JST. Available products and seats are limited; some products follow a shorter sales window.

SmartEX’s ordinary one-month FAQ also lists a 10:00 JST opening. Do not read that as the only opportunity to book, or assume that the one-year rule applies to every fare. Read the conditions shown for your exact product, including when the final timetable and seat are confirmed.

  1. Write the station pair, boarding date, passenger count and two acceptable departure times.
  2. Open the correct operator’s service and check the product’s sales window.
  3. Prepare the account and payment card before that window opens.
  4. After purchase, check paper-ticket pickup, QR boarding or one linked IC card per traveler as required by the product.

Use the Japan Time Converter after establishing the correct Japan sales date and time. It converts a time you enter; it does not calculate a railway’s release date or guarantee availability.

The cited Nozomi peak-period page lists specific 2026 and early-2027 periods. Do not reuse its 2026 Golden Week dates as a 2027 announcement. Check the operator’s dated 2027 notice before relying on a seating restriction.

If the first choice is full, test another time, then another date. Keep your accommodation stable while comparing alternatives. RJG’s Shinkansen online booking guide explains payment and operator choices in more detail.

Build a One-Base Itinerary

Travelers enjoying a relaxed local day near a city rail line in spring

The safest Golden Week itinerary is often less ambitious than the map suggests. Choose one base city for three to five nights and use local or short-distance day trips that do not depend on one scarce reserved seat.

Examples of the logic—not fixed recommendations—are:

  • stay in Tokyo and keep Yokohama, Kamakura or a local Tokyo neighborhood as optional day trips;
  • stay in Osaka and choose nearby alternatives that can be reached by frequent local services;
  • stay in Kyoto and avoid changing hotels during the busiest block;
  • place a Tokyo–Kyoto or other long-distance transfer before April 29 or after May 5 when the trip allows.

One base reduces hotel check-in deadlines, luggage transfers and the number of bookings that can fail. It also makes a weather change easier: you can swap the order of local days without losing a long-distance reservation.

RJG’s travel-times guide from Tokyo helps separate realistic day trips from routes that should remain overnight journeys.

Reserve Accommodation Before Adding Attractions

Traveler comparing accommodation options in a Japanese hotel lobby

JNTO advises booking early because hotels and transport fill during Golden Week and prices can rise. Secure the bed before building a chain of timed attractions.

Before paying, confirm:

  • the exact cancellation deadline in Japan time;
  • whether the rate is per room or per person;
  • the final price including taxes and service charges;
  • the check-in deadline and late-arrival contact method;
  • whether changing dates requires a new rate;
  • the nearest station and a route that still works with luggage.

A slightly less central hotel with a direct railway connection can be better than a famous location that forces multiple transfers. Avoid a non-refundable booking until your international flight and critical intercity leg are stable.

What May Be Open or Closed?

Golden Week is not the same as Japan’s New Year closure period. Many attractions, shops and restaurants actively serve holiday visitors, but individual opening hours, reservation systems and maintenance days vary.

Do not write “everything is open” or “everything is closed” into your plan. For each must-do place:

  1. open the official website;
  2. confirm the exact 2027 date and entry method;
  3. check whether advance tickets are required;
  4. save one nearby alternative that does not require a scarce reservation.

If the 2027 notice is not yet published, record the item as not yet confirmed. An older Golden Week schedule can guide your questions, but it cannot prove the 2027 operating day.

A Practical Plan B

Traveler choosing a quiet neighborhood route as a Golden Week backup plan

Use a fallback that removes dependencies instead of adding more reservations:

If our preferred intercity train or hotel is unavailable, we will keep one base city, replace the overnight move with a local day, and travel long-distance after the holiday block.

Good Plan B components include:

  • a neighborhood walk reachable by ordinary local trains;
  • a park, garden or museum with live same-day information;
  • a refundable hotel night at the existing base;
  • a flexible meal plan rather than one distant fixed reservation;
  • enough cash and a charged phone, without assuming either solves a sold-out train.

The purpose is not to avoid every crowd. It is to prevent one unavailable seat from breaking accommodation, luggage, restaurant and attraction plans at the same time.

Golden Week 2027 Checklist

Before booking flights

  • Decide whether you can move Japan dates outside April 29 to May 5.
  • If not, choose one base city and limit hotel changes.
  • Check refundable accommodation options first.

Before rail sales open

  • Identify the correct rail operator for each long-distance leg.
  • Create official booking accounts and verify payment cards.
  • Record the sales time in Japan Standard Time.
  • Prepare two acceptable departures and one alternative date.

One week before travel

  • Recheck official Golden Week transport notices.
  • Confirm hotel check-in times and attraction operating days.
  • Download confirmations and addresses for offline use.
  • Remove any reservation that depends on an impossible connection.

FAQ

When is Golden Week in Japan in 2027?

The official national holidays are Thursday, April 29 and Monday, May 3 through Wednesday, May 5. The weekend of May 1–2 sits between them.

Is April 30, 2027 a public holiday in Japan?

No. April 30 is not listed as a national holiday. People who take that Friday off can create a seven-day break from April 29 to May 5.

Is May 6, 2027 a holiday?

No. The Cabinet Office’s 2027 list does not show May 6 as a national holiday. Do not copy the 2026 pattern, when May 6 is a substitute holiday.

Will Shinkansen trains be crowded?

Golden Week is one of Japan’s busiest domestic travel periods, so popular trains can be heavily booked. Actual 2027 peak measures and train-specific restrictions must be checked on the operating JR company’s official site.

When can I book a Shinkansen for Golden Week 2027?

It depends on the operator and product. JR East ordinary sales normally start at 10:00 JST one month ahead. SmartEX also offers eligible reservations up to one year ahead from 05:30 JST, with product and seat limits. Check your exact product rather than applying one window to all Shinkansen journeys.

Should I avoid Japan during Golden Week?

Not necessarily. If your dates are fixed, reduce hotel changes, reserve critical transport early, and use one city as a base. Travelers with flexible dates can move long-distance travel outside the holiday block.

Are shops and attractions closed during Golden Week?

There is no universal rule. Many places operate for holiday demand, while individual opening days and reservation requirements vary. Check each must-do place’s official 2027 notice.

What is the safest Plan B if trains are sold out?

Keep your current base, replace the overnight move with a local day, and shift the long-distance trip to another time or date. Do not let one sold-out seat break several prepaid bookings.
