TOKYO · SHINJUKU CITY
Why Visit Shinjuku
World’s Busiest Station
Guinness-certified at 2.7 million passengers per day across 11 lines and 5 operators. Once you crack Shinjuku’s layout, the rest of Tokyo feels easy.
Two Faces in One District
West side — corporate skyscrapers and a free 202m observation deck. East side — Kabukicho neon, postwar yakitori alleys, and Shinjuku Golden Gai jazz bars. Both are 5–10 minutes on foot from the same gates.
Department Store Heaven
Isetan, Takashimaya, Lumine — the basement food halls (depachika) alone are worth half a day. Tax-free counters at every flagship store for tourists.
Top 5 Spots
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
Free 45th-floor observation deck with 360° views. Mt. Fuji visible on clear days. The best Tokyo skyline view that costs nothing — both North and South decks are open as of 2026.
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
58-hectare garden mixing Japanese, English, and French landscaping. Tokyo’s top hanami spot in spring, momiji in autumn. 10 minutes on foot from Shinjuku Station’s New South exit.
Omoide Yokocho
A maze of 80 tiny grill bars built on a 1946 black-market site. Smoke, lanterns, charcoal — order one drink minimum, cash preferred. Best after sunset.
Shinjuku Golden Gai
Six narrow alleys packed with 200-plus tiny bars, each seating 4–8. Some charge a cover (¥500–¥1,500). Look for English signs out front — not every bar welcomes tourists.
Godzilla Head & Kabukicho
The 12-meter Godzilla head leans over the 8th-floor terrace of Shinjuku Toho Building (above Hotel Gracery and TOHO Cinemas). Roars and lights up every hour from noon to 8 PM. Kabukicho’s neon main street starts at the gate below.
