Hachioji Quick Guide

Mount Takao, art and local food.

Images are AI-generated illustrations, not photographs of these places or products.

Quick Facts

  • Choose your zone: Hachioji Station serves the city center; Takaosanguchi Station serves Mount Takao. These are separate rail destinations, not one compact walking district.
  • Mountain half-day: allow about 5½ hours from Takaosanguchi, including lunch and a cable-car ride. The suggested route below turns back at Yakuo-in and does not include the summit.
  • Cable-car budget: adult ¥490 one way / ¥980 return. Food, train fares and any museum exhibition tickets are separate.
  • Pick a city afternoon instead: an exhibition at Yume Art Museum, a bowl of Hachioji ramen and Miyako Manju. Add Fujimori Park only if you have more time.
  • Opening hours and menu prices can change. Figures below are official website listings checked on October 17, 2026; unspecified prices should be checked with the venue.

Why Visit

A mountain day you can scale to your energy

Cable car + walking, or a longer hike

Start with the foothill museum, ride up part of the mountain, then walk to Yakuo-in. A cable-car visit still involves slopes and steps; choose the foothills alone if that suits your group better.

Make room for the city itself

Art, ramen and a small sweet to take away

Hachioji is more than the starting point for Mount Takao. Around the city station, combine a changing art exhibition with local food; this works as a separate, less mountain-focused visit.

Try different foods in different zones

Tororo soba below; tenguyaki above

Plan a meal near Takaosanguchi and a snack by the upper cable-car station. Keep the city ramen stop for a different meal, rather than trying to eat at all six venues in one afternoon.

Takaosan Yakuo-in

Mountainside · about 20 minutes on foot from upper Takaosan Station

3

Mount Takao summit — an optional extension

599 m · not included in the half-day course

Suggested Half-day Course

Takao foothills + Yakuo-in, about 10:00–15:30. This is an editorial planning example, not a timed walk or a reservation. It uses the cable car both ways and leaves out the summit and downtown Hachioji. Queues, weather and your walking pace may require a shorter visit.

  1. Start at TAKAO 599 MUSEUM

Walk from Takaosanguchi and spend roughly 40 minutes with the displays. Check maintenance closures first. The cafe is not open yet.

    Official info 1 · Official info 2
  2. An early lunch at Takahashiya

Only use this timed stop after confirming it is open. If closed or the wait is long, choose FuMotoYA at the station from 11:00 instead, or simplify the mountain visit. Allow about an hour for lunch and the walk to Kiyotaki cable-car station.

    Official info 1 · Official info 2
  3. Ride up, then walk toward Yakuo-in

Board at Kiyotaki; the ride takes about 6 minutes, excluding queues. From upper Takaosan Station, allow 30–40 minutes for the signed temple approach with pauses; the temple’s walking estimate is about 20 minutes.

    Official info 1 · Official info 2
  4. Visit Yakuo-in, then turn back

Allow time for the temple and the return approach. Do not add the summit to this schedule; if arrival is late, shorten the stay and keep enough time for the descent.

    Official info 1 · Official info 2
  5. A tenguyaki near the upper station

Take a short snack break at Sumika if open, then return by cable car. Check the day’s final service when you buy the ticket rather than relying on a fixed closing time.

    Official info 1 · Official info 2 · Official info 3
  6. Finish with a foothill cafe break

Return to 599CAFE if time permits, aiming to finish around 15:30, or head straight to Takaosanguchi for the train. In winter, cafe last orders are 15:30; do not extend the mountain walk on the assumption it will stay open late.

Getting Here & Area Map

For the mountain, choose a Keio train to Takaosanguchi from Shinjuku, checking any required transfer. From Tokyo Station, take the JR Chuo Line to Takao and change to the Keio Takao Line for Takaosanguchi. Takao is a transfer station, not the foothill destination. JR Hachioji and Keio Hachioji serve the separate city center. The embedded map below is centered on Takaosanguchi and the foothills; use the individual card maps for the mountain and city venues.

Before You Go

Prefer a city afternoon?

Choose a separate 3–4-hour planning example: JR Hachioji north exit → Tsuruya Seika for a takeaway sweet → Yume Art Museum → cross to the station’s south side for Binbin Honten. Check Tsuruya’s hours and the exhibition schedule first. The museum normally closes Mondays; on a closure day, choose a station-area food visit and, in suitable weather, Fujimori Park instead. The park is a further detour; check a route app or bus service before adding it.

Official info 1 · Official info 2 · Official info 3 · Official info 4
Is the cable-car route step-free?

Do not assume so. The ride removes part of the climb, but the temple approach still involves walking, slopes and steps. Visitors needing step-free access should ask the transport operator and temple about the intended route before traveling; the foothill museum and cafe may be a more suitable plan.

Official info 1 · Official info 2
What should I prepare for the mountain?

Check weather and trail notices, wear well-fitting walking or hiking shoes with grip, and carry water, rainwear and a warmer layer. Leave time to descend in daylight and confirm the final cable-car service. Follow marked routes and shorten the visit if conditions or your group’s pace make the plan unrealistic.

Official info 1 · Official info 2
How much should I budget for food?

The confirmed unit price used here is Sumika’s tenguyaki at ¥250 including tax. For other meals and desserts, check the current menu at your chosen venue before setting your budget. The six food cards are alternatives, not a six-stop eating tour.
