The 98th Omagari National Fireworks Competition will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Omagari Hanabi Park on the Omono River in Daisen City, Akita. Gates open at 3:00 p.m.; daytime fireworks run from 5:10–6:00 p.m., and the evening competition runs from 7:00–9:30 p.m.
This is not an event to visit first and solve later. The organizer says every viewing area inside the venue is reserved or ticketed, nearby hotels often fill months ahead, and the station is about a 30-minute walk from the riverbank. JR East is adding late-night trains, but some require a printed ticket or cannot be booked through Eki-net.

Quick Answer
Before traveling to Omagari, confirm all three parts of this plan:
- Viewing: you hold a valid ticket for the official venue, or you have chosen not to attend the summer competition.
- Return: you have identified a train you can actually use after the show, including its reservation and ticket-collection rules.
- Night: you have a confirmed room or a realistic same-night route to your accommodation.
If any part is missing, do not assume you can use a free venue area, buy a same-day ticket, sleep at the station, or improvise a long drive after the show. The safer Plan B is to change the date or choose the smaller official Spring or Autumn Chapter.
Use This Ticket–Train–Hotel Go/No-Go Check
| Your situation | Decision |
|---|---|
| Ticket, return train and accommodation are all confirmed | GO: save the official app, collect any required paper ticket and allow extra walking time |
| Ticket confirmed, but no return train or room | NO-GO yet: solve the night plan before traveling |
| Return and room confirmed, but no viewing ticket | NO-GO for the official venue: there is no free viewing area inside it |
| A train appears in a screenshot but you have not checked its booking rule | HOLD: some late trains cannot use Eki-net or an e-ticket |
| You plan to drive out immediately after the finale | HIGH RISK: nearby parking may remain exit-restricted until midnight and road congestion can continue until 2:00–3:00 a.m. |
This three-part check is more useful than asking only whether a hotel or a train is “available.” A late train does not help if you cannot obtain the correct ticket; a venue ticket does not solve where you will spend the night.

Do You Need a Ticket for Omagari Fireworks?
Yes. The organizer's current FAQ states that all viewing areas inside the official venue are reserved or ticketed and that there are no free viewing areas there.
For 2026, the main online sales periods were June 12–23 and, if seats remained, July 21–31. The in-person sale was July 5. The organizer also says summer same-day tickets are generally not available.
The official ticket page lists these common seating options:
| Seat type | Capacity | 2026 price |
|---|---|---|
| Chair seat | 1 | ¥8,000 |
| Pair bench | 2 | ¥13,000 |
| Leisure-sheet seat | 4 | ¥15,000 |
| Embankment box seat | 4 | ¥30,000 |
| Table seat | 4 | ¥38,000 |
| Deluxe table seat | 4 | ¥50,000 |
| Platinum pair seat | 2 | ¥70,000 |
Multi-person prices are charged per area, not per person. Personal cancellations, seat changes and reissues are not accepted.
Can tourists buy tickets from overseas?
The organizer says ticket purchases are currently possible only in Japan. Its listed online channels are Lawson Ticket and ePlus, with separate delivery or handling conditions. Do not treat an unofficial marketplace, social-media message or generic “free event” listing as proof that you can enter the official venue.
If the normal sales period has ended, check the organizer's ticket page for a new official announcement. This guide does not recommend an unverified resale route.

Which 2026 Extra Train Can You Actually Use?
JR East's original July 17 plan listed 77 extra trains for August 29–30. However, its August 5 update canceled the Kitakami Line extra services because of track damage, so do not treat 77 as the number still expected to operate. The last fireworks are scheduled to finish at 9:30 p.m., but the walk back to Omagari Station is normally about 30 minutes before crowd controls are added.
These are selected late departures shown in the official special-train notice:
| Direction | Train | Omagari departure | Arrival | Important booking note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sendai | Komachi 288 | 10:19 p.m. | 11:59 p.m. | All reserved seats |
| Morioka | Komachi 368 | 10:46 p.m. | 11:59 p.m. | Collect a paper ticket; Shinkansen e-ticket and Eki-net Q Ticket cannot be used |
| Morioka | Komachi 370 | 11:28 p.m. | 12:43 a.m. | Collect a paper ticket; Shinkansen e-ticket and Eki-net Q Ticket cannot be used |
| Morioka | Komachi 374 | 12:30 a.m. | 1:29 a.m. | Not bookable through Eki-net; buy at a staffed JR counter or reserved-seat machine |
| Morioka | Komachi 376 | 1:01 a.m. | 1:57 a.m. | Not bookable through Eki-net; buy at a staffed JR counter or reserved-seat machine |
| Morioka | Komachi 378 | 1:18 a.m. | 2:12 a.m. | Not bookable through Eki-net; buy at a staffed JR counter or reserved-seat machine |
| Akita | Komachi 363 | 11:15 p.m. | 11:46 p.m. | All reserved seats |
| Akita | Komachi 365 | 12:25 a.m. | 12:56 a.m. | Not bookable through Eki-net; buy at a staffed JR counter or reserved-seat machine |
| Akita | Komachi 367 | 12:37 a.m. | 1:16 a.m. | Not bookable through Eki-net; buy at a staffed JR counter or reserved-seat machine |
These times are planning evidence; they do not confirm current seat availability or unchanged operation. Check JR East again shortly before travel. The August 5 cancellation of the Kitakami Line extra services shows why old screenshots and the original total are unsafe planning evidence.
If Eki-net is unfamiliar, read RJG's Eki-net English booking and ticket-pickup guide before choosing a train.

Where Should You Stay if Omagari Is Full?
The official access guide warns that hotels near the event often fill well in advance. Use the train you have confirmed to define the hotel search—not the other way around.
| Base | When it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Omagari / Daisen | You already have a confirmed room and want the simplest night | Walking route, check-in deadline and luggage storage |
| Akita | You hold a late northbound train reservation | Arrival after midnight, hotel reception hours and transport from Akita Station |
| Morioka | You hold a late southbound Komachi or local-train plan | Exact train, required paper ticket and post-midnight hotel check-in |
| Kakunodate, Tazawako, Shizukuishi, Yokote or Yuzawa | You find a room along a listed JR corridor | The actual August 29 timetable; do not assume every town has a usable post-show train |
The organizer lists accommodation corridors but does not book rooms for visitors. A room appearing on a map is not enough: confirm the reservation, latest check-in time and the final transfer from the station.

How Long Does It Take to Reach and Leave the Venue?
The official route from JR Omagari Station to the main venue is about 2 km or 30 minutes on foot under normal conditions. The event attracts extremely large crowds, so the return walk and station entry can take longer.
Use this exit plan:
- Save your train number, departure time and ticket format offline.
- Keep the paper ticket dry and separate from loose receipts if your train requires one.
- Decide before the show whether seeing the 9:30 p.m. finish leaves enough time for your train.
- Follow official crowd-control instructions rather than attempting a shortcut through closed streets or riverbank areas.
- Carry only luggage you can manage in a slow, dense crowd.
Leaving early can add margin, but it also means missing the finale. RJG cannot choose that trade-off for you; calculate it from your confirmed train and your own walking needs.

Should You Drive to Omagari Fireworks?
Public transport is the organizer's recommended option. The official access page warns that congestion on Routes 13 and 105 and around Omagari IC can continue until 2:00–3:00 a.m. Some nearby parking areas may not allow vehicles to exit until midnight.
If you drive, reserve only an official or clearly authorized parking option, read the current traffic map, and place the car in the direction of your return route when possible. Do not promise a fixed journey time after the show.
What Should You Bring?
- A valid event ticket and any required JR paper ticket
- A phone with offline copies of the timetable, hotel address and booking references
- A charged power bank that is safe to carry
- Water and heat protection for the afternoon wait
- A rain jacket or poncho; umbrellas are not permitted in the viewing area
- Flat shoes suitable for uneven ground and a long return walk
- Toilet paper or tissues; the organizer says summer temporary toilets may not provide toilet paper
- A small trash bag and only luggage you can keep under control

Ticket, Hotel or Train Missing? Use This Plan B
If you have no official venue ticket
Do not assume there is a free area inside the venue. Check only the organizer's latest announcements. If no verified option appears, skip the summer competition rather than entering restricted land or buying an unverifiable ticket.
If you have a ticket but no room or return train
Do not travel until the night plan is confirmed. Recheck Akita and Morioka only after confirming a train you can book and a hotel that accepts your arrival time. A station is not an accommodation plan.
If weather or river conditions change
Light rain does not automatically cancel the event. Severe weather or river conditions may cause a delay or postponement. The organizer says a postponed ticket remains valid for the new date; refunds are available only if the event is canceled. Check the official website, app and social channels before departure.
If the whole plan fails
Choose the official Spring or Autumn Chapter, which the organizer describes as calmer alternatives, or select another fireworks event whose ticket, transport and accommodation you can confirm. RJG's Japan Summer Fireworks Guide can help you compare options.

Useful Next Steps
- Open the official 2026 event overview.
- Check the official ticket page rather than a generic event listing.
- Download the latest JR East special-train notice.
- Confirm your exact ticket format, room and late check-in.
- Recheck weather, river conditions and service changes on August 29.
- If a ticket platform requires a Japanese phone number or another local condition, use RJG's Japan Event Ticket Guide before paying.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Omagari Fireworks in 2026?
The 98th National Fireworks Competition is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026. Daytime fireworks run from 5:10–6:00 p.m., and the evening competition runs from 7:00–9:30 p.m. Gates open at 3:00 p.m.
Is there a free viewing area at the official venue?
No. The organizer says all viewing areas inside the official venue are reserved or ticketed. Do not rely on older or generic listings that describe the event as free.
Can I buy an Omagari Fireworks ticket from overseas?
The organizer says purchases are currently possible only in Japan. The listed online channels are Lawson Ticket and ePlus, subject to their delivery and handling conditions.
Are same-day tickets available?
The organizer says same-day tickets are generally not available for the summer National Fireworks Competition. Check the official ticket page for any later announcement rather than assuming gate sales.
How far is the venue from Omagari Station?
The official estimate is about 2 km or 30 minutes on foot. Allow additional time for crowd controls on the return journey.
Are there trains after the 9:30 p.m. finish?
Yes. JR East lists extra late trains toward Sendai, Morioka and Akita, including departures after midnight. Some require paper tickets or cannot be booked through Eki-net, so check the rule for your exact train.
Where can I stay if Omagari hotels are full?
The organizer suggests searching along the Akita Shinkansen, Ou Main Line and Tazawako Line, including Akita, Morioka and intermediate areas. Book a room only after confirming a usable post-show train and the hotel's late check-in policy.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain does not automatically stop the event. Severe weather or river conditions can cause a delay or postponement. Use rainwear instead of an umbrella in the viewing area and check official updates before travel.
Last checked: August 10, 2026. Ticket availability, train operation, traffic controls, weather and river conditions can change. Recheck the organizer and JR East before traveling.
