Tokyo Marathon 2027 takes place on Sunday, March 7, 2027. For a runner living outside Japan, the urgent problem is not the race route. It is choosing the correct entry path before the Japan Standard Time deadline, understanding what the membership route actually costs, and avoiding a void entry after selection.
The two main overseas paths are not identical. ONE TOKYO GLOBAL Member Entry is open first and requires paid annual membership. General Entry opens the following day after that member window closes. An unsuccessful GLOBAL member entry is automatically carried into the general lottery, so submitting duplicate applications can create a serious problem rather than an extra chance.

Quick answer: which entry route should you use now?
As checked on August 8, 2026:
- Already a ONE TOKYO GLOBAL member, or willing to pay the JPY 30,000 annual membership fee? Complete the member entry by 5:00 p.m. JST on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Membership does not guarantee a race place.
- Do not want the paid membership route? General Entry runs from 11:00 a.m. JST on Friday, August 14 until 5:00 p.m. JST on Friday, August 28, 2026.
- Applied through ONE TOKYO GLOBAL but were not selected? The official GLOBAL FAQ says you are automatically entered into the general lottery. Do not make a duplicate race application.
- Budget for the race and baggage separately. The international event fee is USD 230. Optional race-day baggage check costs JPY 1,200 and must be selected during entry.
- Save the result and payment dates. GLOBAL results are scheduled for September 1, with payment due by September 11. General results are scheduled for September 18, with payment due by September 30.
- Plan to reach Tokyo before race day. Packet pickup is in person at Tokyo Big Sight on March 4–6, 2027. There is no race-day or proxy pickup.

Do not confuse a donation with Charity Runner Entry. The organizer says Charity Runner applications closed on July 9. Registration to donate without a race place continues until August 31, but that application does not create a marathon entry.
ONE TOKYO GLOBAL is a paid membership and does not secure a race place
ONE TOKYO GLOBAL currently lists an annual membership fee of JPY 30,000, even when someone joins partway through the membership year. The separate international Tokyo Marathon event fee is still USD 230 if selected.
The member field is 3,000. If applications exceed that field, the organizer conducts a draw. The practical comparison is therefore between a paid member lottery with membership benefits and the later general lottery.
If you use the GLOBAL member route and are unsuccessful, the official FAQ says you are automatically included in the general lottery. No second application is required.
Eligibility: residence, age and finish-time requirement
For the general marathon, the current requirements include:
- age 19 or older on March 7, 2027;
- born on or before March 7, 2008;
- able to complete the marathon within 6 hours 30 minutes; and
- accepted by the organizer under the event rules.
The official FAQ says residence, rather than nationality, controls the overseas route. If you live outside Japan, use the English entry site even if you are a Japanese citizen. A foreign resident living in Japan can use the English site, but will be treated as an overseas entry and charged USD 230.
Enter your name as it appears on your passport. The FAQ says names and dates of birth cannot be changed after entry, and the organizer may ask an overseas applicant to prove residence during packet pickup.
Do not make duplicate applications
The event regulations prohibit duplicate applications by the same person across ONE TOKYO GLOBAL, General and Semi-Elite entry. A discovered duplicate can invalidate the entry, and a paid fee may not be refunded.
Use one email address for your own application. Group entry is not available. Each runner applies individually and should keep access to the registered email and My Entry account.
Entry fee, payment and optional baggage
The current international event fee is USD 230, including the entry fee, handling fee and tax. The official rules say payment is available by credit card or a specified online financial service through My Entry.
Selection is not the final step. A selected entry becomes void if payment is not confirmed by the deadline.

Baggage check costs extra and must be chosen early
Race-day baggage check is not included in the USD 230 event fee. It currently costs JPY 1,200 including tax.
Select the baggage service during entry. The FAQ says the choice cannot be added after entry is completed, and payment for baggage is handled separately after the event fee. Do not assume that a runner can arrive with a large bag and buy the service at the start.

How the lottery and results work
Tokyo Marathon 2027 has a total field size of 40,000 across its divisions. The member, general, charity and semi-elite routes use different allocations and selection rules.
For ONE TOKYO GLOBAL Member Entry, a draw is held if applications exceed its 3,000-place field. The official selection description then places unsuccessful GLOBAL applicants into the general selection process. The GLOBAL FAQ confirms that no further general-entry action is required after an unsuccessful member result.
For General Entry, the organizer conducts a draw if applications exceed capacity. Results are announced through My Entry, with an email telling applicants that the result is available. Treat My Entry as the primary status page and use the email as a prompt to check it.
The current schedule is:
- September 1: GLOBAL and Semi-Elite results;
- September 11 at 5:00 p.m. JST: GLOBAL payment deadline;
- September 18: General Entry result;
- September 30 at 5:00 p.m. JST: general payment deadline; and
- after selection, if places remain: an additional draw may be held for eligible ONE TOKYO Premium and GLOBAL members as of October 31.
An additional draw is conditional. Do not plan a trip on the assumption that it will happen.
Ten-minute application checklist
Prepare these items before opening the entry form:
- Correct route: GLOBAL member or General Entry.
- Passport name: enter the name exactly as shown on the passport.
- Residence: use the route that matches where you live.
- Personal email: do not share one address among multiple applicants.
- Predicted finish time: give a realistic estimate based on your running ability.
- Record file when required: runners declaring an estimated finish of 3:00:00 or faster need an accepted race record.
- Baggage choice: decide during entry whether you need the JPY 1,200 service.
- Payment access: confirm that your payment method can complete the later My Entry payment.
- Calendar reminders: save result and payment deadlines in JST.
- Evidence: save the completed-entry confirmation and check that My Entry exists.
For a declared estimated finish time of 3:00:00 or faster, the organizer requires a finisher certificate or official result from an eligible event held from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2026. A marathon within three hours or a half marathon within 1:25:00 is accepted for this specific predicted-time verification. Records measured solely by a running app or GPS watch are not accepted. JPEG and PDF files up to 10 MB are listed as accepted formats.
This record rule is separate from the stricter RUN as ONE Semi-Elite qualifying standards.
What to do after you are selected
1. Pay before the deadline
Open My Entry from the official route and complete the event-fee payment. If you selected baggage check, complete its separate payment as instructed.
2. Plan arrival around packet pickup
Packet pickup is scheduled at Tokyo Big Sight South Exhibition Halls:
- March 4 and 5, 2027: 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and
- March 6, 2027: 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The runner must attend in person. Photo identification is checked, proxy pickup is not permitted, and there is no race-day pickup. Do not schedule an international flight that lands too late to reach the final pickup window.

3. Wait for the final runner guide before fixing details
The organizer says the Runner Guidebook is scheduled for mid-February 2027. Current FAQ answers defer several operational details—including liquid restrictions and baggage pickup locations—to that guide.
Book changeable travel where practical and recheck the official guide before departure. Do not copy a previous year's start procedure into the 2027 plan.
Plan B if you miss the deadline or lose the draw
Use this order. Each option solves a different problem.
1. If you miss the GLOBAL deadline, use General Entry
General Entry opens at 11:00 a.m. JST on August 14 and closes at 5:00 p.m. JST on August 28. This is the cleanest Plan B for a runner who did not submit a member entry.
If you already submitted a GLOBAL entry, do not duplicate it. An unsuccessful member application is automatically carried to the general lottery.
2. Check International Tour Partners listed by the organizer
The organizer's international-runner page lists official tour operators by region. These can be entry-inclusive packages accepted first-come, first-served, but availability, territory, itinerary and price vary.
Begin with an operator linked from the official Tokyo Marathon page. A race entry is not transferable between individuals, and substitute runners are prohibited.
3. Treat the additional draw as conditional
If places remain after the member and general selection stages, an additional draw may be conducted for eligible ONE TOKYO members. The official rule does not promise that places will remain. Keep My Entry and official notices monitored, but do not buy non-refundable travel solely for this possibility.
4. Consider the overseas volunteer route
The official FAQ says applications for English-speaking global volunteers living outside Japan are planned to open on October 6, 2026. Applicants must first register with VOLUNTAINER. Volunteering is not a race entry, but it is an official way to participate in the event if your goal includes being part of race weekend.
5. Build a spectator trip when Tokyo still has value for you
If running Tokyo Marathon is the sole reason for an expensive trip, wait for a confirmed entry before committing to restrictive bookings. If Tokyo itself remains worthwhile, build a separate spectator itinerary and keep your race application outcome distinct from the travel decision.
Travel and race-week reminders
- The race is scheduled for Sunday, March 7, 2027.
- The start is near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building; the official FAQ names Shinjuku and Nishi-Shinjuku as nearby stations.
- Packet pickup is across the city at Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake, not at the start.
- Large suitcases and race-day baggage are different problems. Store travel luggage separately.
