Use Takanawa Exit for Shinagawa Prince Hotel, Maxell Aqua Park and the west-side route toward Takanawa Gateway City. Use Konan Exit for the east-side business district and the onward walk or local connection to Tennozu. The old Tokaido and Shinagawa Shrine are farther south near Keikyu Kita-Shinagawa and Shimbamba. First understand the name: the station is not in Shinagawa City
JR East lists Shinagawa Station’s address in Takanawa, Minato City. The broader visitor area extends south and east into Shinagawa City, including Kita-Shinagawa, the old Tokaido and Tennozu Isle. That naming mismatch is why a place described as “in Shinagawa” may not be beside the station.
GO TOKYO treats Shinagawa Station, Shinagawa City and Tennozu as one useful southern-Tokyo visitor area, but it also shows that the attractions are distributed. Save the exact destination, not only the word “Shinagawa.”

JR and the Tokaido Shinkansen use different platform groups, and Keikyu sits on the Takanawa side. JR East’s current station page gives standard transfer estimates of about 10 minutes between the Shinkansen and several JR local lines and about 12 minutes between the Shinkansen and Keikyu. Those are planning standards, not guarantees. Add more time with children, large luggage, crowds or construction.
The official Keikyu airport page currently gives an example of about 14 minutes between Haneda Airport and Shinagawa. The exact service, platform and wait time still depend on your date. Do not turn that example into a fixed hotel-to-terminal promise.
Store large luggage before the walk
GO TOKYO and JR East both identify coin lockers at Shinagawa Station. Availability is not guaranteed, especially around holidays and major travel periods. Your hotel or another staffed storage option can be safer when you must collect the bag by a fixed time.
Large luggage changes the route. The station is busy, some transfers are long, old-road pavements are exposed, and Tennozu is not one covered extension of the concourse. Takanawa is the west side for the Prince complex and Takanawa route. Konan is the east side for offices, buses and the onward Tennozu waterfront.

Walking load: Route A is roughly 2-3 km before indoor walking. The full Route B can approach 4-5 km depending on the waterfront and old-road sections. A suitcase, summer heat and station construction can matter more than the raw distance.

Accessibility, luggage and family caveats
- Step-free routes: JR East and JR Central publish station maps, and major facilities publish their own accessibility information. Construction and equipment status can change; use the exact operator and destination map.
- Keikyu local stops: Kita-Shinagawa and Shimbamba require a train that stops there. Confirm before boarding.
- Tennozu: use Monorail, Rinkai Line, taxi or bus when a long outdoor walk is unsuitable. The district is not one fully covered complex.
- Old Tokaido: pavements, road crossings and shrine steps differ from a modern mall. Shorten the route rather than promising a fully step-free heritage walk.
- Families: identify nursing rooms, restrooms and seating inside the exact facility. Tennozu’s district-wide FAQ does not promise a public nursing room.
- Large luggage: store it first and keep the collection deadline visible. Do not rely on finding an empty large locker at the last minute.
Plan B
If it rains or the heat is severe
Use Maxell Aqua Park, Ecute or the Prince complex. Takanawa Gateway City can provide modern indoor/public-space options, but check the exact route and open facility. Drop the exposed old-Tokaido and boardwalk sections.
If Aqua Park hours do not fit
Use Takanawa Gateway City, a cinema or a same-side meal. Do not cross to Tennozu only to fill an hour unless weather, transport and luggage support the walk.
If you have only two hours between trains
Stay inside or immediately beside Shinagawa Station. Store luggage only if collection is simple, eat, and return to the correct Shinkansen gate with a large buffer. A waterfront or shrine route is not a safe short connection.
If Tennozu galleries are closed
Keep the boardwalk, Bond Street and canal architecture, or end the route after lunch. A changing gallery calendar is not a reason to add a distant filler attraction.
If lockers are full
