Quick answer: Japan’s 2027 calendar has 16 national holidays and one substitute holiday, March 22. Start with the dates below, then check the actual business or railway you plan to use. A holiday does not tell you whether a particular place is open. Golden Week, mid-August Obon and New Year deserve extra booking attention.
Choosing a flight is easier when you can see which days might change the rest of the trip. This guide brings the full year together: official dates, weekend connections, the September gap that is easy to overlook, and practical checks before committing to hotels or intercity travel.

Japan public holidays 2027: the complete list
The Cabinet Office’s official calendar lists these dates. March 22 is a substitute holiday rather than an additional named national holiday. The National Astronomical Observatory’s 2027 calendar also confirms the named holidays.
| 2027 date | Weekday | Holiday |
|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Friday | New Year’s Day |
| January 11 | Monday | Coming of Age Day |
| February 11 | Thursday | National Foundation Day |
| February 23 | Tuesday | Emperor’s Birthday |
| March 21 | Sunday | Vernal Equinox Day |
| March 22 | Monday | Substitute holiday |
| April 29 | Thursday | Showa Day |
| May 3 | Monday | Constitution Memorial Day |
| May 4 | Tuesday | Greenery Day |
| May 5 | Wednesday | Children’s Day |
| July 19 | Monday | Marine Day |
| August 11 | Wednesday | Mountain Day |
| September 20 | Monday | Respect for the Aged Day |
| September 23 | Thursday | Autumnal Equinox Day |
| October 11 | Monday | Sports Day |
| November 3 | Wednesday | Culture Day |
| November 23 | Tuesday | Labor Thanksgiving Day |
There are no national holidays in June or December 2027. That does not make every date a normal business day: weekends, individual closing days and the wider New Year break still matter.
How the dates connect to weekends
The following windows are calculated from the holiday dates and a Saturday–Sunday weekend. They are useful planning checks, not forecasts of how crowded a specific train or city will be. People who work weekends or do not observe every public holiday have different breaks.
| Window | Calendar connection |
|---|---|
| January 1–3 | New Year’s Day plus weekend |
| January 9–11 | Coming of Age Day plus weekend |
| March 20–22 | Weekend plus substitute holiday |
| May 1–5 | Weekend followed by three holidays |
| July 17–19 | Marine Day plus weekend |
| September 18–20 | Respect for the Aged Day plus weekend |
| October 9–11 | Sports Day plus weekend |
Golden Week: April 30 is still a working-day gap
April 29 is a Thursday holiday. Friday, April 30 is not a national holiday; May 1–2 are the weekend and May 3–5 are holidays. For someone with weekends and public holidays off, May 1–5 connects without taking leave. Taking April 30 off can extend that to April 29–May 5. May 6 is not a national holiday in 2027.
This explains the calendar opportunity, not everyone’s work schedule. For rail booking and route choices, continue to the Golden Week 2027 guide rather than treating this annual overview as a detailed booking manual.
September does not create a continuous Silver Week
Respect for the Aged Day falls on Monday, September 20, and Autumnal Equinox Day on Thursday, September 23. September 21 and 22 are not national holidays. The two holiday dates therefore do not automatically form one continuous break. Someone taking both intervening weekdays off could connect them, but do not label September 18–23 a nationwide six-day holiday.

Three travel seasons to check beyond the holiday list
JNTO identifies New Year, Golden Week and Obon as major domestic travel seasons. They can bring heavier demand and changes to business hours. Their effect depends on your route and the places you choose.
Golden Week, late April to early May: Check accommodation and the intercity leg that matters most before fixing the order of your cities. If the route only works with one particular departure, keep the plan flexible until you can secure it.
Obon, around mid-August: Obon itself is not in the statutory national-holiday list. Mountain Day is August 11, but it is not a definition of every business’s Obon break. Ask your hotel and any essential service about your actual dates instead of copying a nationwide closure range.
New Year, late December to early January: January 1 is the national holiday; the surrounding business break can be longer. The New Year 2026–2027 guide covers the season at the start of 2027. It does not confirm operating arrangements for December 2027 and January 2028.
What should you check for opening and closure?
A national calendar cannot confirm a restaurant reservation or a museum’s admission hours. Use it to identify the day, then move to the individual operator’s dated notices. Separate the building’s hours from the service inside it: an accessible lobby does not mean every desk, shop or restaurant is operating.
| Your plan | Check before going | Useful fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Meal or shopping | The exact branch’s hours, holiday notice and booking availability | A nearby place whose opening is separately confirmed |
| Museum or attraction | Visit-date calendar, ticket conditions and last entry | Another open venue in the same area |
| Rail or airport transfer | Actual travel date, departure time, service notices and ticket rules | A workable earlier or later departure |
| Hotel arrival | Check-in deadline and late-arrival instructions | Agree on an arrival plan directly with the hotel |
JNTO notes that many convenience stores operate through national holidays, including 24-hour branches. Still verify the location you will actually use, especially if it is inside a larger building. Treat it as a possible meal backup, not proof that all shops follow the same schedule.

A museum can open on Monday and close on Tuesday
Tokyo National Museum’s visitor page currently gives a concrete example: it normally closes on Mondays, opens when Monday is a holiday, and closes the following day. It also lists exceptions. Read the actual calendar before applying that pattern to your visit; other museums may have different rules.
As of this check, that page says its January 1, 2027 opening hours are still to be determined. A confirmed national holiday date is therefore not a confirmed museum opening time. If a must-see visit remains unconfirmed, put it on a flexible day and save another plan nearby.
Trains: use the travel date, not a saved weekday screenshot
Start a fresh route search with the correct date and time. Then verify the railway, station and destination, especially where similarly named stations belong to different companies. Tokyo Metro’s station information is an official starting point for checking the line you need. A time copied from an ordinary weekday is not confirmation for a holiday.
For longer journeys, the JR Central timetable page warns that its basic timetable does not list every train. Additional services can depend on season, events and day of week. It also says Nozomi services on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen use all-reserved seating during major peak periods. Follow the linked official announcement for the applicable dates; do not extend that rule to every 2027 holiday or every Shinkansen service.
If the departure you want is full, compare another time before rebuilding the whole itinerary. Check arrival time, transfers, fare and ticket conditions together. A slower option can work only if it still gets you to the hotel or attraction before the relevant cutoff. Do not assume a different service is covered by the same pass or reservation.

Book the trip in an order that preserves choices
- Mark the dates. Put your proposed stay beside the annual calendar and the relevant seasonal break.
- Find the essential booking. Identify the hotel, intercity leg or timed-entry visit that the rest of the trip depends on.
- Compare the whole route. Look at accommodation availability and workable transport together before fixing a city order.
- Read the terms. Record payment timing, cancellation deadlines and arrival conditions before choosing a restrictive booking.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the address, booking reference and official contact method available offline.
- Recheck before use. Look for new notices close to the visit and check rail service information on the day.
These are planning recommendations, not promises about the cheapest booking date. The calendar alone cannot establish hotel prices, peak departures or a universal reservation deadline. When your trip depends on a specific service, use that provider’s current conditions rather than an annual travel article.

Three examples of a workable holiday plan
A Tokyo stay over January 9–11
The Monday holiday connects to the weekend. Keep your desired indoor visit on a day whose admission is confirmed. If a museum opens on the holiday and moves its closure, check Tuesday as well. Group a meal and another activity in the same neighborhood so one unavailable booking does not create a long cross-city detour.
Several cities during Golden Week
Build the trip around a realistic intercity transfer and accommodation you can actually use. If that combination fails, compare changing the city order or keeping one base longer. A local day trip can be an alternative, but its transport and attraction hours still need checking; “local” does not guarantee empty trains or open doors.
Mid-August with few red dates on the calendar
A mostly weekday-looking calendar can still overlap Obon travel. Confirm essential bookings and any small business you particularly want to visit. Avoid adding an unverified stop between two fixed departures. Keep one meal option close to your accommodation and a simple alternative activity.

Plan B when the first choice is unavailable
For a closed attraction, first check whether a visit on another day is possible. If it is not, choose a nearby venue with confirmed opening and admission conditions. For a full restaurant, compare another time or a separately verified alternative. For a full train, search a different departure and check whether the arrival still fits your next booking.
An outdoor walk can be an alternative to a timed attraction, provided the area is accessible and weather allows. Do not replace one uncertainty with another: save a route you can navigate and an indoor option if necessary. RJG’s Tokyo Area Map can help you choose a manageable neighborhood.

Frequently asked questions
How many public holiday dates does Japan have in 2027?
There are 16 named national holidays and one substitute holiday, March 22: 17 dates in the official list.
Why is March 22 a holiday?
Vernal Equinox Day falls on Sunday, March 21. Monday, March 22 is the substitute holiday.
Is April 30, 2027 a national holiday?
No. It is the Friday between the April 29 holiday and the May 1–2 weekend. Taking leave can connect the break.
Is May 6, 2027 a national holiday?
No. The 2027 Cabinet Office list does not include May 6. Check individual operating schedules separately.
Is there a continuous Silver Week in September 2027?
Not from public holidays alone. September 20 and 23 are holidays, but September 21 and 22 are not.
Is Obon a national public holiday?
Obon itself is not on the national-holiday list. It can still affect domestic travel and individual business hours.
Does a public holiday mean all attractions are closed?
No. Check the particular attraction’s calendar and entry rules. A holiday opening can also move a normal closing day.
Can I use a weekday train time on a holiday?
Do not assume it applies. Search your actual date and check the operator’s timetable, service notices and ticket conditions.
Are there national holidays in December 2027?
No. Year-end business closures can still occur; verify your provider’s dates instead of relying only on the holiday list.
Before you finalize the trip
Keep the official calendar, your essential booking and one confirmed fallback together. For a single-city stay, checking opening dates may be enough. For a holiday-season trip across several cities, secure the parts that depend on each other before committing to the rest. Recheck the exact provider close to travel: the holiday dates and the provider’s operating arrangements are separate facts.
