A Japanese phone number is not required for every event ticket in Japan. However, a domestic ticket route may ask you to verify a number when you create an account, apply for a lottery, receive an electronic ticket, accept a companion ticket, or log in to the entry app.
The important question is not simply, “Do I need a Japanese number?” It is: Will the same number and device still work at every required stage for this event?

Passing checkout does not prove that you can display the ticket at the venue. Treat account access, ticket delivery and entry as one continuous route.

Stage 1: check the account verification method
“Phone verification” does not always mean an SMS code. A service may require you to call a displayed number from the phone number registered to the account.
Ticket PIA’s current guide says phone verification can be required for new registration, purchases, receipt of distributed tickets, resale purchases and app login. Its process uses an outgoing call to a displayed 050 number. It also says a phone without a calling contract cannot complete that call-based verification.
Before a busy sale opens, check:
- whether the route permits your country or residence;
- whether the form accepts an international number format;
- whether verification uses SMS, an outgoing call or an app;
- whether your plan can actually send or receive what is required; and
- whether the number can remain active until after the event.
Do not assume that an English-language page automatically accepts overseas registration. Equally, do not assume that every Japanese seller requires domestic membership. The organizer’s current link and the exact sales route decide.
A data-only travel eSIM may not solve the problem
Many travel eSIMs provide mobile data but no ordinary voice number or SMS service. A data connection can open the ticket website while still being unable to complete an SMS or outgoing-call check.
Look at the actual plan details, not only the word “eSIM.” Confirm whether the plan includes:
- a phone number;
- incoming SMS;
- outgoing voice calls;
- service outside Japan, if you must apply before arrival; and
- an activation period long enough to cover ticket delivery and the event date.
Do not buy a phone plan only because another traveler says it worked for a different event. The other event may have used a different seller, verification method or ticket app.
Stage 2: keep the purchase number under your control
A temporary workaround can fail later. If the number is borrowed, expires, changes owner or cannot be used on your device, password recovery or ticket delivery may break after payment.
Ticket PIA says one phone number can be in a verified state for only one member account. Its security system may also request verification again even after an earlier successful check.
Use a number only when:
- you are authorized to use it;
- you can keep it through the event;
- you can receive or place the required verification communication; and
- the event’s name, purchaser and ID conditions still fit your group.
Do not enter a fabricated address or someone else’s number simply to pass a form. That can create a mismatch when the ticket is issued, transferred, recovered or checked at entry.
Stage 3: check the electronic-ticket number match
The phone requirement may return when the ticket becomes available.
eplus says that, when Smart Ticket phone authentication applies, the number entered for ticket download must match the number registered with the application. Its guidance warns that changing the registered number can prevent ticket download. It also warns against deleting the app or changing devices after download without following the official procedure.
AnyPASS requires a smartphone with internet access and a SIM that has a phone number. Its ticketing guidance says issuance can fail when the purchase phone number and the number registered in AnyPASS do not match.
Before paying, record:
- the named delivery app;
- the number entered at application;
- the scheduled ticket-release date;
- whether the app is available on your device;
- the device-change procedure; and
- the organizer’s support contact.
A screenshot of an order or QR image is not a substitute for the live ticket when the venue requires the official app.
Stage 4: confirm companion distribution before buying multiple tickets
Group tickets can introduce a second phone-number problem. The purchaser may receive all tickets first, while companions must later accept tickets through an official account or app.
Ticket PIA says a recipient must complete phone verification to accept a ticket distributed through My Ticket. AnyPASS supports distribution by email, LINE, SMS or QR code, but only for tickets where distribution is enabled. eplus also provides official Smart Ticket distribution for eligible events.
Check the event-specific rules for:
- whether each companion needs an account;
- whether each person needs a compatible smartphone and number;
- when distribution becomes available;
- whether the purchaser’s own ticket can be transferred;
- whether the lead purchaser must enter with the group; and
- whether names or photo ID are checked.
Never assume that buying several tickets means you can send every ticket to any phone.
A useful exception: official overseas and non-member routes
Some organizers provide a dedicated overseas route that avoids domestic membership. Lawson Ticket’s non-Japanese guide says users accessing from overseas cannot create or log in to its domestic memberships, but some general-sale tickets can be reserved without membership. Its reservation guide still asks for an email address and phone number, so you must check what the actual event form accepts.
An overseas route may also use convenience-store pickup, a paper ticket or another delivery method. If you select in-store payment or collection, you must be in Japan before the stated deadline. For more detail, follow the exact instructions linked by the organizer rather than a generic search result.
The existence of an overseas route is event-specific. It does not make every ticket on the seller’s domestic catalog available to tourists.
Plan B when your number cannot pass the route
Use this order:
- Return to the organizer: look for an official international, overseas, guest or non-member link for the same event.
- Change the official delivery method: choose paper, convenience-store pickup, browser QR or venue exchange when the same official sale offers it.
- Ask the official support desk before paying: describe your country, number type and ticket-delivery method without sending passwords or verification codes.
- Change the date or ticket category: another sales phase may use a different official route.
- Choose another event: replace the event rather than inventing registration details or accepting an unsafe transfer.
Do not pay a stranger for an account login, an SMS code, a screenshot or a promise that staff will ignore the ticket name. If a sold-out event later opens official resale, use only the resale route named by the organizer or authorized seller.
