Read the neighborhood through buildings

Old residence and modernist courtyards

The 1919 Asakura house and Fumihiko Maki’s Hillside Terrace offer two different ways to see the neighborhood. Keep the distinction between paid house admission and the commercial complex clear. Residents’ private areas are not part of an architectural tour.

Slow down around books

T-SITE and a seated break

Leave time to browse rather than using the bookshop only as a photo backdrop. T-SITE publishes separate bookstore and cafe hours, so check the venue you actually want. Food, drink and paid lounge seating are separate purchases.

Choose food that belongs to the walk

Original bakery, pantry and neighborhood tables

Chez Lui’s first shop began in Daikanyama, while Hillside Pantry has served the complex since 1993. The six food cards offer different uses: a meal, a seated pause or something to take away. They are an editorial selection, not a ranking or a six-meal itinerary.

Former Asakura Residence

General ¥500 · last entry 30 minutes before closing

Visit the 1919 wooden house and its sloping stroll garden. It opens 10:00–18:00, shortening to 16:30 in November–February; normally closed Mondays, the next weekday if Monday is a holiday, and December 29–January 3. Enter opposite the police box: you cannot enter through Hillside Terrace. Uneven garden footing needs care.

Hillside Terrace

Mixed-use complex; tenant and event hours vary

Follow the low-rise buildings and courtyards along the street. The operator’s architectural story credits Fumihiko Maki and describes a complex of homes, shops and offices developed in phases. Use the current tenant and event information; a closed gallery is not automatically open to casual visitors.

Daikanyama T-SITE & Tsutaya Books

Bookstore listed 09:00–22:00; other tenants differ

The operator gives about five minutes on foot from Daikanyama Station. Browse the book selection, then choose whether you want a cafe or paid lounge. The site’s wider facility hours are not the bookstore’s opening hours; check the shop information and special closures.

LOG ROAD DAIKANYAMA

Former railway corridor; shop hours vary

Walk the planted promenade created on the former Toyoko railway alignment. It is a short landscape-and-shopping stop on the east side of the neighborhood, separate from T-SITE. Check the current tenant list before planning a particular meal: older guides may still describe former food or brewery tenants.

Saigoyama Park

Optional hillside detour in neighboring Meguro City

Meguro City places the park about fifteen minutes from Daikanyama Station. Sloping paths connect trees, lawn and an outlook. Use it for an outdoor pause if the weather and your walking needs suit; clear distant views are weather-dependent, so this guide promises no Mount Fuji sighting.

Chez Lui, Daikanyama original shop

09:00–21:00 · usually closed Tue

The operator identifies Daikanyama as the birthplace of its first shop. Pick a curry bread or another available bakery item for takeaway from the Sarugakucho original shop, not the nearby Address branch. Tuesday holidays are listed as open; special year-end hours and current prices need checking.

Hillside Pantry Daikanyama

10:00–19:00 · usually closed Wed

Opened in Hillside Terrace in 1993, this bakery and grocery names its natural-yeast croissant as a long-running signature. Choose bread and something from the day’s deli range for a flexible meal; dine-in is listed as available. The Japanese operator page gives a Wednesday holiday exception. Check stock and counter prices.

IVY PLACE

Breakfast pancakes or a planned lunch

The operator describes the restaurant as part of a wooded, library-like setting at T-SITE. Its October 2026 dessert menu lists pancakes 08:00–17:00. The breakfast menu runs to 10:45, while the separate lunch menu runs 11:30–15:00. Choose a meal or a pancake break, reserve or allow for waiting, and check the current menu price.

Yoshoku KUCHIBUE

Gratin or stew; verify current service first

Hillside Terrace’s current tenant introduction describes this C-building ground-floor restaurant and its gratin and beef stew. It supplies a savory sit-down alternative to bakery and cake stops. The building directs visitors to the operator’s Instagram for opening days and hours: check that before making it your fixed lunch plan.

Matsunosuke N.Y., Daikanyama

09:00–18:00; last order 17:30 · closed Mon

The Tokyo branch in Hillside Terrace gives a local baking stop without pretending that this Kyoto-based shop originated in Daikanyama. Choose a slice from the available pie or cake range. Apple-pie varieties are seasonal, and online whole-pie prices do not establish the current price of a cafe slice.

IL PLEUT SUR LA SEINE

Baked sweets to take away; check operator updates

The operator’s current shop guide places this patisserie on the second floor of Daikanyama Forum, along old Yamate-dori. Ask for the baked sweets available that day rather than expecting the full online range. Check the operator’s Instagram for trading days; do not carry over seating or hours from an old guide.

Suggested Half-day Course

Suggested 10:00–15:00 walk, easiest to arrange Thursday–Sunday under ordinary residence and pantry closing patterns. It is not a reservation schedule or measured walking record. Choose the pantry or another confirmed-open venue for lunch, and omit a stop if queues grow. Saigoyama is optional in rain or if slopes are unsuitable.

  1. Residence before the shopping

Use the separate entrance opposite the police box and allow about 45–60 minutes for the house and garden.

Getting Here & Area Map

Use Tokyu Toyoko Line Daikanyama Station, then follow the destination’s own walking directions. Hillside Terrace and the residence are on the old Yamate-dori side; T-SITE is farther along that side. LOG ROAD is on the former railway corridor east of this core, while Saigoyama Park is to the west. The streets include slopes: do not assume a station lift makes the full walk step-free.

Before You Go

Which closures affect the walk?

The residence is normally closed Monday, Hillside Pantry Wednesday and Chez Lui’s original shop Tuesday, with holiday exceptions. Matsunosuke’s Tokyo branch closes Monday. Check the actual date before selecting the meal; one shop’s hours do not cover the whole area.

Source 1 · Source 2 · Source 3 · Source 4
What if it rains?

Keep the residence only if open and its paths suit the conditions, then spend more time at the bookshop and a confirmed-open cafe. Skip the park and shorten LOG ROAD. This is a partly outdoor walk, not a continuously covered route.

Source 1 · Source 2 · Source 3 · Source 4
Are the six food shops a ranking?

No. They explain the neighborhood through an original bakery, Hillside’s pantry and tables, pies and takeaway sweets. Choose one meal and one break. Prices and dietary suitability must be checked with the operator; the AI food images are generic concepts.
