Quick Facts

  • Start: Nakano Station, North Exit

  • Choose one meal and one sweet break
  • Tetsugakudo is a separate northern extension
  • Park lawns and paths may close for maintenance

Why Visit

Browse with a collecting goal

Original toys, comics and specialist shops

Broadway mixes specialist collecting shops with ordinary neighborhood retail. Pick a subject and a budget before browsing, then compare the condition and contents of individual items. An open building does not mean every shop is open.

A basement market as well as a mall

The building directory includes handmade udon, dumplings and soft serve in the basement. Choose one meal or snack rather than treating them as a compulsory tasting circuit. They add everyday shopping to a visit often focused only on collectibles.

Balance shopping with open space

Park first, temple later

Shiki no Mori Park offers a pause northwest of the station; the streets north of Broadway lead toward Arai Yakushi. The much farther Tetsugakudo extension is optional. You can enjoy a complete half-day without trying to visit every park.

1

Nakano Sun Mall

Covered approach from the North Exit

Use the arcade as your first orientation line toward Broadway. The shopping association interview describes a covered street more than 220 meters long. The shops set their own hours; keep the central walking route clear while browsing.

2

Nakano Broadway

Check the floor map and each shop’s hours

Choose a few collecting shops, then look at the basement food counters. The official directory separates floor and category, which is more useful than wandering every corridor. Ask each shop about photography, item condition and purchasing conditions. No stock, tax-free service or English support is guaranteed by this guide.

3

Arai Yakushi Baishoin

Visiting hours 09:00–16:00; check notices

Continue north through the neighborhood toward this active Buddhist temple in Arai. Use the operator’s notices for services and special days. Religious traditions about healing belong to the temple’s history; they are not a medical benefit this guide can promise. The temple lists visiting hours of 09:00–16:00; respect any temporary access restriction.

4

Shiki no Mori Park & Central Park edge

Northwest of the station; lawn access varies

Take a short outdoor pause before the shops. The city manages the lawn with seasonal reseeding and closes the lawn during recovery, so a photograph of grass does not guarantee you may sit on it. Use open paths and benches; neighboring commercial buildings have their own rules.

Tetsugakudo Park: optional extension

Seasonal gates; restoration can require detours

This philosophy-themed park is well beyond the core station walk. Its operator lists 08:00–17:00 in October–November, with different seasonal hours and a December 29–31 closure. Nakano City announces restoration work and possible path closures in 2026. Allow a separate 60–90 minutes for travel and a short visit, and follow local detours.

Local Food: 6 Stops

Aoba, Nakano original shop

10:30–around 21:00, or until sold out

Choose chuka soba for a main meal at the brand’s Nakano original shop, north of the station. The operator lists no regular closing day and warns that service ends when supplies run out. Confirm today’s menu and price at the shop; a branch elsewhere is not the same stop.

Udonya Daimon

Basement counter; check current service

Broadway’s tenant introduction describes udon kneaded and cut by hand in a small basement counter shop. Choose a simple bowl when you want lunch inside the building. The listing gives an 11:00 start, Wednesday closing and sell-out finish; confirm these conditions rather than planning a late-afternoon guaranteed meal.

Soft serve in Broadway B1

A soft-serve stop brings the basement’s food-shopping side into a collecting-focused visit. Ask which sizes and flavors are available and choose a manageable portion. This guide does not promise a particular giant tower, flavor count or old advertised price. Eat only where the shop permits.

Handmade Tenshin Mata Ashita

Takeaway dumplings, subject to stock

The building’s shop introduction lists handmade shumai, steamed meat buns and gyoza. It is a different use of the basement from sitting down for another full meal: buy a small amount for takeaway if available. Confirm how it should be stored or reheated, and do not block the corridor while eating.

Umeya: a Sun Mall sweet break

Anmitsu; verify today’s opening

Nakano City’s interview traces this family-run sweet shop to 1956 and describes its third generation. Choose anmitsu for a seated break rather than a second main meal. The interview explains the local history; it is not a guarantee of today’s seating, timetable or price.

PAPABUBBLE, Nakano shop

10:00–20:00 in the current operator listing

The city’s interview explains why this shopping street became the brand’s first Japanese location, with candy made as well as sold here. Pick a small bag from the current range while walking toward Arai Yakushi. Production demonstrations are not guaranteed at every visit. Use the current operator price rather than old interview prices.

Suggested Half-day Course

A suggested 10:30–15:15 core walk, with an optional northern extension. These are editorial time allowances, not measured walks or reservations. Leave 60–90 minutes for Broadway browsing and extra time if your chosen meal has a queue. If it rains, keep the arcade and building and omit the outdoor extensions.

Getting Here & Area Map

Arrive at JR or Tokyo Metro Tozai Line Nakano Station and follow signs for the North Exit. Sun Mall leads toward Broadway; Shiki no Mori Park is on the northwest side. The temple and Tetsugakudo lie progressively farther north. For the optional park extension you can finish toward Seibu Shinjuku Line Araiyakushi-mae instead of walking all the way back. Follow current station and construction signs.

Before You Go

Is Broadway open in the morning?

Do not use a single building opening time for every tenant. Check the specialist shops you want before setting an early start; this course places collecting after lunch.

Source 1
Can I do both parks?

Yes, with extra walking and less shopping, but Tetsugakudo is not beside Broadway. Treat its 60–90-minute travel-and-visit block as optional and check restoration detours. The core walk is complete without it.

Source 1 · Source 2
What about current food prices?

Current counter prices were not verified for these independent shops. The food cards are an editorial mix of meals, sweets and takeaway, not a rating ranking. Old city interviews and tenant pages explain local ties; they do not establish today’s price or stock.
